Welcome to the home page of the Society for Social
Medicine 54th Annual Scientific Meeting, which will be held at Queen’s
University Belfast on Monday
6th to Wednesday 8th September 2010.
For many this is one of the highlights of the academic
year - a conference where you can hear about and debate the latest
health services and public health research in a friendly atmosphere,
as well as enjoy great social occasions.
This is the first year that the conference has been
hosted in Northern Ireland, and we hope that in addition to the more
academic events you’ll take the opportunity to enjoy some of the highlights
of the north of Ireland, such as:
- Beautiful scenery, including the north coast, with stunning
views, such as the world-renowned Giant’s Causeway, home to the
legend of Finn MacCool and a breathtaking geological landscape;
or the landscape of County Down, where the mountains o’ mourne
sweep down to the sea.
- The vibrant Queen’s University area, with many bars and cafes,
the newly refurbished Ulster Museum, and the striking architecture
of the main building of the University.
- An exciting and compelling cultural heritage, including the
Grand Opera House, the murals and peacewalls of Belfast, and the
arthouse Queen’s Film Theatre.
- A famously friendly and welcoming atmosphere, with plenty of
opportunities to sample local fare such as Guinness and Irish
Whiskey, potato champ, or Irish stew, or to shop ‘till you drop
in Belfast’s new Victoria Square, a stunning new commercial and
leisure development, hosting panoramic views of the city via the
centre’s glass dome.
